SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING & APPLIED SCIENCE

MSc, PgDip, PgCert in Polymer Engineering & Science

Jointly offered by Aston University and the University of Birmingham, this MSc equips science and engineering graduates for an exciting industrial career in a vast array of polymer application industries including:

  • Plastics and rubber
  • Novel biomedical applications
  • Telecommunications

It draws on complementary, cutting edge research carried out by academics in departments at Aston University and the University of Birmingham.

Most of the theoretical and practical modules take place in a purpose-built suite of classrooms and laboratories at Aston University. Students have full access to relevant academic facilities at both universities as well as their sporting and social facilities.

Course content

Nine theoretical modules

  • Synthesis of polymers
  • Molecular characterisation
  • Rubbers and glassy polymers
  • Polymer crystallisation
  • Synthetic biopolymers
  • Ultimate fate of polymers
  • Processing engineering of polymers and mould design
  • Processing engineering, mechanical properties
  • Business Studies and Health and Safety.

Three practical modules

Laboratory-based practical modules in the areas of:

  • Synthesis and characterisation
  • Material study and/or properties
  • Fabrication and testing Six-month research project.

Teaching and Assessment
Performance will be evaluated by a mixture of coursework, examination and laboratory work. All MSc students must submit a substantial dissertation based on their research project.

Entry requirements
The MSc in polymer engineering and science is open to all graduates with a good first degree (at least 2:2 standard) in any engineering discipline, the physical sciences, the biological sciences and biochemistry.

Modes of study
MSc students
This programme is made up of nine theoretical modules (each worth 10 credits) and three practical modules (each worth 10 credits) and a substantial research project (worth 60 credits). This leads to 180 credits. It can be completed in one year of full-time study or two to five years of part-time study.
Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate students
The Certificate and Diploma are qualifications in their own right and can be accumulated towards an overall Masters degree. The Postgraduate Diploma comprises the nine theoretical modules and three practical modules. Leading to the award of 120 credits.
The Postgraduate Certificate requires 60 credits. Students need to complete successfully at least two practical modules and six theoretical modules.
